Ideas for Garden Fencing on a Budget
Garden fencing can be cheaper than most homeowners imagine. All it takes is a little imagination. There are a few garden fence ideas and materials that will not only save you money, but give your garden a touch of uniqueness and character. Expensive garden fences can sometimes take away from the informal look of a residential garden. Here are some alternative garden fencing ideas.
Used brick. Recycled bricks are commonly found in tiling and pavement layouts, but it’s just as easy to construct garden fences out of them. Unlike retaining walls, brick fences don’t require much in terms of smoothness or density. While recycled brick might require some maintenance over time, you don’t have to be as concern with the visual impact of weathering, since the fence is essentially weathered by design.
Dry stone. Stone fences are even cheaper to build and maintain than recycled brick fencing, since they don’t need to be reinforced with mortar. Anything that needs replacing can be replaced rock by rock, unlike most fencing materials that require switching out an entire panel. Needless to say, your material costs are nil unless you’re determined to use a particular type of stone constistently, and need it now.
Bamboo. A great approach to privacy fencing is using bamboo, which is much cheaper than the pine or cedar lumber used for traditional stockade fences. Bamboo reeds tend to look more distinguished with age, and seem almost irreplaceable, while other types of lumber that age clearly look like they need to be replaced — and they usually do.
Wine bottles. Bottle fences can be arranged in a few ways. The bottlenecks can be planted in the ground for a vertically shallow fence. A split rail fence can have several series of upright bottles supporting the cross members. For purely decorative garden fencing, upside-down bottles can be sparsely arranged inside the panels, held up by vertically mounted dowels.
