Due to the interest in garden lighting, there are many versions and selections to pick from. A lot of people usually settle on either solar or electric in most cases. Regardless of your unique style, there is an alternative to suit your needs. To create an intimate setting all over your place, choose the gasoline based lights as this provides you with the tranquil feel that you would like.

They are really higher in maintenance and you have to personally light each and every light as well as storing the gasoline or oil inside a safe place for safe-keeping. Nearly all individuals pick electrical lights for the convenience component because you have the option of whether you would like them on or not. You will have endless options with all the manufacturers and designs in the marketplace. Be careful as your initial cost could get out of hand in order to pay someone to put in all of the electrical wiring. Gas lights use either oil or gas and present a softer, romantic feel as part of your garden.

The green route to take would be to select the solar garden lights for your garden. No external power source is needed and solar garden lights can conserve a lot in energy bills. Additionally they last long and are installed very easily, and for a place with plenty of sunlight solar lighting is most likely the best and most less expensive option. The plethora designs and styles available guarantees that you could find something suited to all garden types and sizes. Many homeowners love deck lighting and it is very easy to create a nice-looking atmosphere with deck lights.

Usually the solar or electric options would be best for this. Rope lighting is also a choice that you should consider. It looks like a rope and is wonderful for highlighting a path or to show the outline of a garden. Since they were never designed to work by themselves, rope lights should also have other lights that can be used with them.

More and more of us are choosing hardwood flooring over other choices such as carpet. It looks good and it stays looking good for years and many of the woods used for floors can be installed at a reasonable price, not too much more than paying for carpeting, installation and padding, although some woods are very much more expensive than others.

If you like to consider the environment in your buying choices however, wooden flooring can leave you feeling a little uneasy. Once the trees used for hardwood flooring are cut down, it is many years before the tree can be replaced and meanwhile you have played a part in a huge deforestation problem.

For that reason it makes sense to choose bamboo flooring. As bamboo is part of the grass family, when it is cut down it simply regenerates within a very short period and meanwhile the roots hold the soil together and help prevent erosion often seen in deforested areas where rainwater washes away the soil.

Many people however do not like the look of bamboo compared to wood. It can look a bit plain compared to the delicate grain patterns in beech, mahogany or oak wooden flooring. Although the bamboo can be dyed to produce different colors resembling any wood, the grain patterns are still missing. This problem can be resolved however if you use strand woven bamboo flooring. The strands of bamboo are fused together in such as way that they look just like the patterns you get in a wooden plank. You no longer get the lack of interest that you might get in a bamboo floor and you can get the wooden floor look without destroying the environment.

As well as helping the environment you will be saving quite a lot of money too. Bamboo planks are much cheaper to produce than hardwood flooring and many of the cost savings are passed onto you as a consumer. Why not help your budget and the environment next time you are looking for flooring for your home?

Okay. As a person who loves purses, shoulder bags, pocketbooks, briefcases, and anything for carrying stuff around in—you know, all the “stuff” necessary for the day, like makeup, brush, toothbrush (to keep the pearly whites pearly), travel lotions, shampoo and conditioner (you never know when you might get stuck somewhere), my set of colored pens and markers, multiple sets of keys, a screwdriver, aspirin, eye drops, extra pantyhose, and that ever-important flashlight, among other things—I have to confess that sometimes I just have to get that fabulous new bag with the cute trimmings and the double leather bottom that promises never to bag or sag.

But things get complicated when I remember I also want to go green…or “greener,” to go with my green clothing (see www.greenclothingguide.com for more information on why you may want to have more green clothing) and household cleaning products, and that’s where my conscience comes in—and I become aware that I need to think before I buy. Do I pick leather? Is there such a thing as organic leather? Do I go vegan? And how much will my budget take? You may have the same dilemma as I do.

Organic Leather Bags
If you have to have leather but still want to go green, you may have to look for bags made of leather that has been treated only with organic products. To have completely organic leather, the animals should have been raised on organic farms, and all the tanning and processing should be with organic dyes and natural vegetable oils. These types of bags are free of allergens, and at the end of their long and happy life, will return to the environment without leaching any harmful chemicals into the soil or water.

A number of designers create organic leather bags: Donna Karan, Robe di Firenze, and Hillary Taymour’s Collina Strada line.

Organic leather bags may be on the high end pricewise, however, so keep your budget in mind.

Recycled Leather Bags
If “green” for you can also mean “recycled,” where the designer/producer uses recycled leathers to produce their bags, then you can always go that route, instead. Some purse designers use only recycled, or “up-cycled” (meaning, reused) materials, with lovely results. Ashley Watson, Shannon South’s reMade USA, and Beth Springer are just a few.

For the more budget wary, take a look through some second-hand or vintage stores – you may find some reusable leather purse bargains there. Or, if you are handy with redesigning, you could purchase some leather coats and jackets and refashion them into a bag of your own design.

Cruelty-Free Vegan Bags
But, if your conscience says that you also want your products to be cruelty free, there are plenty of other materials you can look for to keep your purses, bags, carrying totes, and knapsacks more animal-friendly. Look for vegan bags, and organic or natural linens, hemp, silk, or other fabrics to complete your bag collections. Some notable designers are Steve Madden, Vegan Chic, Matt & Nat, or Gloria Gerber (for bags made out of recycled rubber).

Second-hand and vintage clothing stores are full of bags that could be considered vegan. Be aware that although animal-friendly by not using animal products, not all vegan bags may be earth-friendly, however, since some of them are made from either new or recycled plastic, which may or may not biodegrade easily, depending upon its nature.

Whatever you decide, there’s pretty much something for your fancy, taste, and budget available.

When one thinks of limestone, the image that comes to mind is one of vast dripping caverns full of stalactites and stalagmites. The other name for this mineral is calcium carbonate and this is familiar to those who are follow health trends, as calcium is an important part of maintaining good health. What most people probably do not know is that the flooring material known as travertine is a member of the limestone family.

This limestone based floor material is not as well-known as its popular cousin, marble, but it is becoming more popular. One of the nice features is that its natural coloring is perfect for those who prefer neutral tones. Due to organic features like iron and such, the stone can be walnut-hued, or tan or even nearly ivory in coloring.

When used for the floor, this stone is finished in one of four ways. The leading finish is what is called honed, and this is a smooth look with a matte appearance. Those who appreciate word play will like the fact that two of the other types of surfacing are called tumbled and brushed. As one might expect these tousled floors are rich with textures.

Travertine tiles are not happy to just be underfoot. They aspire to greater heights. As such they can be found in other places like in the shower and climbing up buildings as cladding. Counters and even walls are also homes to this versatile material.

Since this a natural material, it has some enemies when it comes to spills and splashes. Because of its limestone background, it has a particular problem with things that are acidic in their nature, just as most people have problems with those with acid tongues. If the little people living in a home are prone to spill their orange juice or the adults are sloppy with their coffee, travertine tiles are going to react badly. In these cases, a sealer can be a floor’s best friend.

If you have a baby, chances are that you use an array of products which may or may not be gentle on the earth. So how green is your baby? Thankfully it is not too hard to find baby needs products in this day and age that are both eco-friendly green and practical. No longer does “green” mean “hippie”, nor does it mean that you must refuse all cleansers and deodorants, wear uncool clothes or milk your own cow.

In the realm of baby needs, many baby items can be replaced by the exact equivalent with a product line that is much more eco-friendly. For instance, replace disposable diapers with reusable terry nappies – not a huge sacrifice, and you will find they are much cheaper too in the long run anyway. Terry nappy second uses include as rags, car polishers and spill cloths. Secondly, if you are not keen on using pre-loved clothing on your baby, then why not purchase eco-friendly garments made from natural fibers such as organic wool, hemp, bamboo or organic cotton? These clothes will have a much lighter footprint on ther earth than their polyester and synthetic cousins, and they will the much-enjoyed added benefit of looking and feeling much softer and more luxurious on your baby’s skin. Everybody loves a baby clothed in soft cuddly clothes.

What about the cot? Many cots are made from wood sourced from environmentally and culturally damaging deforestation sites in the endangered areas of the world. Much better to source a cot made from local timbers, grown sustainably and ethically, or to co-sleep with your baby which has the added benefit of helping the family get a better night’s sleep, and also contributes to a better success rate of breastfeeding due to proximity of baby and mother and the mother’s sleep gains from having baby near her – and did you know that breastfeeding alone reduces your baby’s footprint on the earth by a huge amount?

Every can of formula required many dairy cows to be raised and kept and milked for that formula to be made. For the first six months either breastmilk or baby formula is all a baby needs, and he or she will continue to drink breastmilk or formula for the entire first year of life. So every breastfeed given reduces a baby’s carbon footprint by not requiring dairy cows to be farmed and formula to be manufactured. The benefits to breastfeeding are enormous and include better overall life-long health and more bonding opportunities for mother and baby.

It’s simple to reduce your baby’s carbon footprint by doing the little things that all add up – and then you will be able to say, “Yes! My baby is very green!”

People are looking for all sorts of ways to jump on the green living bandwagon. Not only because they want to lessen their carbon footprint, but also because it is the right thing to do to save the planet for generations to come. There is no excuses for continuing to destroy the planet once people become educated about ways to preserve it. The damage of all the years of abuse the environment has suffered as a result of man is evident. Ecofriendly gardening is yet another way to contribute to the consciousness of change and maintaining the environment.

Before the days of riding lawnmowers, electric hedgetrimmers and powered lawn sweepers, people used hand powered tools to maintain the yard. There were no electric edgers, people used to trim edges by hand and cut the grass with a hand lawn mower. These old fashioned tools required more effort, but it was a way to stay in shape when there was really no time or thought of a gym workout. Grass trimmings were not collected as often in the past, but if they are, they can be used in the compost pile as a natural fertilizer.

Green living encourages consumers to use less water and become more energy efficient. This mindset helps to limit power tool use on the lawn and garden while getting exercise. Many calories are melted using the outdoor broom or manual rake as a push lawn sweeper. Consequently, two accomplishments are achieved in one task. When the lawn is manicured and weeding is done the garner now has a wider selection of natural weed killers online, or at the local garden supply store.

There is no reason for those that want to be more ecofriendly to participate in the evolution of change. It is going to make a difference that will surely be evident in years to come. Future generations will be grateful that this generation took the time and patience to bring about this consious change.

Many parents who have chosen to use prefold cloth diapers know that there are times when you simply can’t use them. Maybe you are on the road and having a soiled diaper sit in a hot car just isn’t an option. Or you have company and didn’t run the washing machine. Or heck, you and your baby went to a play date and you didn’t bring enough cloth prefolds with you.

Is there a green disposable diaper for these situations?

There is. If you do a little research, you’ll find that you many choices that will work for your baby and keep you in harmony with your environmentally conscious ideals.

Disposable diapers contain a chemical-based gel that absorbs fluids. But these chemicals can be awfully harsh – not only for a baby’s sensitive skin, but also for the earth itself. When you start looking for alternatives, keep your eyes peeled for Sodium Polyacrylate or – as it’s known in the diapering world – SAP.

There are studies that indicate that this absorbent gel can perform just fine in a diaper and that it doesn’t have any carcinogenic qualities. It’s easier on the planet and on your baby.

Still, you might want to skip a diaper with any gel in it at all. If that’s the case, you’ll find some options out there. But you should remember that if a diaper doesn’t have any absorbent gel in it, then you are going to have to change the diaper a lot more often. This might remind you of your cloth diapering regimen, but the upside is that you can simply throw away the diaper when you are finished with it.

You also want to consider diapers in which the primary ingredient is wood pulp fluff or something similar. This material is soft and naturally absorbent. In this regard, it has a lot in common with the hemp or cotton that make up your favorite cloth diapers. Be sure that the wood is harvested in a sustainable way and that no chemicals or dyes are used in the conversion process from lumber to pulp.

You can also purchase reusable diaper covers – latex free and dye free – that can be used with either cloth inserts or disposable inserts. Be sure the disposable inserts are biodegradable. The benefit to this model of diapering is its adaptability. It fits your changing circumstances.

The bottom line is that you don’t have to feel guilty for keeping a pack of disposable diapers on hand. After all, it makes good sense for your family. With a little research, you will find that you can purchase environmentally-friendly disposable diapers that won’t force you to compromise your green ideals. You win, your baby wins, and Mother Earth wins too!

Most people have heard that the world’s water supplies are in trouble due to the rising global population as well as the industrial and organic pollution of our rivers, lakes, streams, and oceans. Clean freshwater for drinking is increasingly hard to come by, and supplies are threatened everywhere. Luckily, we have all the tools we need to combat and reverse this trend- but more people must become aware of the problem and take positive action.
The first thing we need to do, and this may require a shift in attitudes for many people, is to rethink our associations and feelings regarding “waste”. It’s probably accurate to say that most people, at least and especially in industrialized countries, think of things like excrement, urine, and dishwater as waste and therefore inherently dirty. Society has taught them that dirty things are bad and are to be destroyed, or gotten rid of- thrown away. Unfortunately for this kind of thinking, reality dictates that there is no real “away”. It has to go somewhere. So instead of facing up to this fact and moving from there, people are glad when their poop is flushed away using gallons of precious drinking water. If only they realized…
There’s nothing wasteful about our “waste”, meaning the things that come from our bodies. We use animal manure in fields to provide the nutrients that help grow our food. Manure is full of nutrients. The same goes for human manure, yet somehow we have turned away from the use of this wonderful fertilizer that is perfectly safe if composted in a thermophilic environment (something possible for everyone to achieve). Not only are we throwing away this valuable material that comes from our bodies, we are also polluting our water and environment with it! Not very smart, is it?
The same goes for greywater, which is all water except for toilet water. This water from our sinks, showers, and washing machines is put to good use by plants, which prefer it to water straight from the hose. Why do we throw away water that is perfectly good for plants, then waste more water to water them?
Utilizing greywater in the garden and composting our bodily secretions are two of the best waste water treatment methods, and the only ones that are really sustainable in the long run. They don’t require a whole lot of output on our part, and we start saving money instantly once we implement these solutions. Learn more and make the change!

From cleaning products to drink bottles, more and more people are looking for products that are kinder to the environment than the ones we’ve “always” used. Science has responded to this challenge by developing new technology that is friendlier to the environment. One example of this technology is the new LED GU10 lights.

The traditional type contains a fragile filament surrounded by equally fragile thin glass. The longest lasting may last up to 3000 hours. The fragility leads to a lot of waste, as many lamp filaments are broken by vibration before they’re ever used.

One “improvement” on the traditional lamp is the compact fluorescent light (CFL). While these are more economical to operate, they contain small amounts of mercury, a well-known environmental hazard. Because of the mercury content, there are special requirements for disposal of defective lamps, and some manufacturers even recommend disposing of carpets and bedspreads where a CFL bulb has broken. In contrast, the GU10 LED bulb contains no mercury and it burns only 5% of the energy of a traditional bulb, and each lamp lasts 50,000 hours or more.

Two other areas of environment concern from traditional lighting are heat and “light pollution”. Traditional bulbs burn hot. Not only is this a safety issue from minor burns from touching a hot bulb to house fires started by overheated features or proximity of combustibles, but a number of light bulbs can also impact air conditioning expense in summer.

“Light pollution” occurs as light disperses beyond the immediate area where it is needed. When you look toward a nearby town or city at night and see a “glow” on the horizon, you’re seeing light pollution—a phenomenon that is increasingly being blamed for environmental imbalances and disruptions, especially to nocturnal animals. In comparison, LED GU10 lights are more “focused” and can be directed to a specific area.

Using these new lamps can save 95% of energy costs while lasting years longer. Add the other environmentally-friendly features, and you can really go green the next time you need to change a light bulb!

If you are trying to decide on which pool heater to purchase, you may want to opt for a solar powered heater. A solar pool heater system is the reliable, low maintenance heating option that reduces or eliminates heating costs and lengthens your swimming season. You will be happy when your pool is the warmest in the neighborhood and is being heated by an environmentally friendly source – the sun!

Modern solar pool heaters are simple and relatively inexpensive. Solar systems usually use simple, low cost, unglazed plastic collectors. The pool itself is the thermal storage for the system, and the pump you already use for filtering pool water will also circulate water through the solar collectors. All of this leads to inexpensive systems and often very little increase in operating costs.

One of the reasons that there is little increase in your pool’s operating costs is that the plumbing of the solar system is plumbed into the existing filter system. During the day while the filter is operating the water is sent through the collectors before returning to the pool. An automatic system adds a controller and sensors to operate a valve sending the water directly back to the pool or through the collectors to be heated.

In a more basic (and less expensive) system you, the homeowner, set the valve manually to run through the collectors while a timer turns the filter system on during the hours when the collectors will receive direct sunshine. There are a number of factors to consider when sizing the collector area and the first is the actual pool surface area. Start with a minimum solar panel area equal to half of the pools square footage. System design can be further affected by collector orientation, wind conditions, shading of the pool, local climate and length of swimming season desired.

So if you have the space and the sunlight to accommodate a solar heating system, consider this great alternative to gas and electric powered alternatives. Also be sure to use a digital pool thermometer to check the temperature of your swimming pool.
